Hemicholinium on the Isolated Atria of the Tortoise

Abstract
In the isolated vagus-atrial preparations of the tortoise the effects of hemicholinium on the inhibitory responses of the atria to the vagal stimulation, 5-hydroxytryptamine, histamine, dimethylphenylpiperazinium, nicotine, and acetylcholine were studied. Exposure of the preparations to hemicholinium without vagal stimulation produced marked diminution of the inhibitory response to 5-hydroxytryptamine without affection the response to other inhibitory agents. The inhibitory responses to the vagal stimulation were gradually decreased when the stimulations were reeated. When the vagal effect was decreased in the presence of hemicholinium, the inhibitory response to dimethylphenylpiperazinium and nicotine was decreased but the inhibition due to histamine and acetylcholine was not affected. These data indicate that the mechanisms of inhibitory responses to histamine and 5-hydroxytryptamine were different and not associated with the acetylcholine release.
